Levi's Jeans Fit Guide

by Caitlin C. on Oct 01, 2024

Levi’s jeans are truly an investment piece. The durable yet comfortable fit of the denim makes them unrivaled. In this blog, we will discuss the history of Levi’s, the fit of them, and explore our popular numbered boys’ and girls’ Levi’s jeans.

History of Levi’s Jeans

Levi’s jeans are an American staple with a rich history. Levi’s, also known as Levi Strauss & Co was founded in 1853 in San Francisco. There was a need in the market for more durable pants for working men, and by 1873 Levi’s had patented their famous blue jeans. In 1934, Levi’s introduced women's jeans, and by 1960 demand for Levi’s was through the roof abroad; thus, they opened their international division. Since then, Levi’s has led innovation in the denim space by adding stretch into their fabric and being on the cutting edge of trends.

How To Care For Levi’s Jeans

Jeans are one of the few clothing pieces that shouldn’t be washed after every wear. Levi’s recommends washing their jeans every 10 wears unless there are visible stains or they smell. For small stains in between washes, a damp cloth and mild soap can be used to spot clean.

Washing Levi's Jeans

Turn Them Inside Out

  • Turning them inside out will help maintain the color and wash the part of the jeans that is likely the smelliest.

Zip Up and Button Jeans

  • To maintain the shape of the jeans and the integrity of the hardware, it’s recommended to button and zip the jeans. Plus, this will keep other clothes in the washer safe from getting snagged.

Separate Your Colors

  • Wash light jeans with lighter color clothes and dark jeans with other dark clothes. This will ensure there is no dye transfer.

Use a Mild Detergent

  • Using a mild detergent will help maintain the colors in your jeans. This is especially true for darker hues like dark blue and black.

Avoid Using Fabric Softener

  • Fabric softeners can leave a residue on jeans. To maintain the integrity of the denim, fabric softener should not be used. To naturally soften fabrics, opt for a vinegar rinse.
  • Add one cup of vinegar into the top load washing machine during the rinse cycle. For front loaders, you can add one cup of vinegar into the same spot you would put fabric softener before the wash cycle.

Wash In Cold Water

  • Wash your jeans in cold water only. While hot water may seem like an intuitive decision, it will likely shrink your jeans and contribute to color loss.

Choose a Gentle Cycle

  • Choose a ‘gentle’ or ‘delicate’ setting on the washing machine. This will reduce wear and tear on the denim.

Drying Levi's Jeans

Always Air Dry

  • Denim is prone to shrinking when placed in a dryer, not to mention the fabric can be damaged.
  • Hang the jeans inside out in a shady area. Do not hang in direct sunlight as that can compromise the color of the jeans.
  • If hanging them in an outdoor space isn’t possible, a great option is a drying rack. Place the jeans inside out on a drying rack in a dry, ventilated area for best results.

Will Levi’s Jeans Stretch?

A good rule of thumb is the higher the elastane content is in a pair of jeans, the more it will stretch. Typically, kids' jeans will be higher in elastane due to their need for a more stretchy denim that moves with them during their activities. Check material composition when deciding if a pair of jeans is the right fit.

Will Levi’s Jeans Shrink?

according to Levi’s, their jeans are pre-shrunk and, therefore should not shrink. It’s best to buy the correct size and not to buy a size up. With that said, putting jeans in the dryer will shrink them. It’s best to follow the care instructions and air dry them.
